The Inspiration of Saint Matthew

1602
Oil on canvas

Maria Martinez
Michelangelo Merisi di Caravaggio was born in 1571 he is known by Caravaggio. His paintings consist of chiaroscuro which is shading in the background. Caravaggio never drew out his paintings first, he got people of the street to model while he eyeballed and painted. The Inspiration of Saint Matthew is my favorite painting from Caravaggio. The Inspiration of Saint Matthew is painted from oil on canvas. The painting shows temebrism which is the intensity of the black background. The black background Caravaggio is known for pops out the figures the painting is about and helps illuminate them. The light colors he used on the rope helps the painting stand out from the background. Matthew and the angel’s clothing has intense folding and movement. His painting is very realistic. The realism is what captured my eyes to choose him and his paintings.
